The Take

One of our final assignments for Semester 1 was The Take. The Take is the exaggeration of the surprise of a characters reaction to something they have seen – an extreme reaction. It’s a classic cartoon tool used to communicate broad emotion. Think bulging eyes, a very scrunched up face, shooting up into the sky or just look at the work of the great Tex Avery who took The Take to a very extreme level.

For my Take, I decided to animate a fairy who goes into a cafe & orders a fairy cake, thinking it is a tribute to her kin. When the cake arrives, the ‘decorative’ wings flutter. The fairy believes that the humans are mass producing cakes made from real fairies. Cue huge fairy freak out. She goes bright red, steam comes out of her ears then she shoots up into the sky like a rocket.
